Porcia’s Greyhound Retirement Home Retired racers, one small terrier, and everything we learned from them

Site Map

Everything on this site, on one page. It grew in no particular order over more than a decade, so an index is genuinely useful. Start at the home page if you want the short version of who lived here; otherwise pick whatever looks interesting below.

The Dogs

  • Porcia — the dog this site is named for. Born 1992, raced in Nebraska, came to us in 1999, died in September 2003.
  • Flying Kiowa Ray — certified therapy dog, pannus dog, and the calmest animal any of us has met. 1996 to 2005.
  • Kristy — Lift Off, also known as Kristy the Kamikaze Kissing Machine, which tells you most of what you need to know.
  • Lucky — US Luck of the Draw, the newest resident of the retirement home.

Living With a Retired Racer

  • Greyhound Facts — what the breed is actually like to live with, as opposed to what people assume.
  • Foster Dogs — the dogs who stayed with us on their way to homes of their own.
  • Pannus — the eye condition both Porcia and Ray lived with, and what managing it involved.
  • Therapy Dogs — certification, the evaluation, and what visiting work asks of a dog.

Pictures and Stories

  • Photo Album — the whole point of the site, if we are honest. Years of dogs asleep in improbable positions.
  • I Am Your Dog — about the anonymous essay that circulated the early web, and our own thoughts on a short dog life.

Zoe's Corner

  • Dead Toys — a memorial to the toys that did not survive contact with a Smooth Fox Terrier.
  • Gallery of Friends — the pets people sent us pictures of, from Ontario to Australia.
  • Show Dog — Zoe's brief and moderately distinguished conformation career.
  • Wisdom — Zoe's own guide to the meaning of human words such as "come" and "leave it".
